Crater Lake National Park sets aside two days a year for exclusively non-motorized use on East rim Drive. The park partners with the Friends and Discover Klamath to recruit volunteers to assist with set-up, take down, parking, people-counting, bicycle and vehicle parking and staffing aid stations along the route.

The park provides free campsites at Lost Creek Campground for “Ride the Rim” volunteers. No water, no fires, portapotties only.

As with other volunteer projects in the park, volunteers sign an “Agreement for Individual Voluntary Services” with the park. This includes a job description and work schedule. For purposes of Workman’s Compensation and Tort Claims, volunteers are treated as park employees.

artist-in-residence art show

Each year Crater Lake National Park hosts an Artists-In-Residence Program.  Artists spend two weeks living in the park, practicing their skills and capturing the beauty of the park’s landscapes.  An Art Show (free to attend) is the culminating event. Artists display their work and are available to answer questions and share information about technique, subject matter and their experiences.

The Friends of Crater Lake assist Crater Lake NPS staff with opening and closing duties, preparing snacks and drinks and answering visitor questions.
