weather & gear considerations

The weather is unpredictable (warm, cold, dry, wet) and aid stations are spread around the Rim drive in varying locations of sun exposure. Pack gear accordingly. Recommendations: sturdy footwear, water containers, a hat, rain gear, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. Plan to carry what you need for the day, including water and food for snacks and lunch.  The Friends will supply a safety vest for identification and safety.

campsites

Ride the Rim volunteers can camp for free at the Lost Creek Campground on the Pinnacles Road the Friday night before the event. Please let Maradee know if you will be camping.

registration

Volunteers register directly with Ride the Rim. To register:

  • Follow the registration link to access the Volunteer page.

  • Review the volunteer roles and complete the form, indicating you are a Friends of CLNP member and using the Comments field to share your role and site preferences. Roles are not guaranteed.

Please read through the Rim the Rim website for more information about the event. Once you have registered, please email Maradee to confirm you registration. She and Barry will coordinate FOCL volunteers during the event.

additional information

When performing this work, volunteers are required to sign up as National Park Service Volunteers In Parks (VIPs).  This involves signing a Volunteer Agreement, a piece of paper which contains a very broad job description.  Volunteers are treated as NPS employees should there be a Tort Claim or Injury.  But, you are ‘covered’ only if performing assigned tasks as described in the Agreement. You won’t be asked to do anything that is outside of the Agreement and you certainly must not stray from the Agreement.  No volunteer activities will begin until Agreements are signed by all involved volunteers. The Crater Lake staff will provide supervisors.  Do what they ask.  Don’t do what they prohibit, etc. Safety is our first and last priority.  Wear any and all personal protective equipment (PPE) suggested and provided.
